ED Visit Rates for Self-Harm by Race and Ethnicity

14 County Finger Lakes Region

This chart displays self-harm related emergency department (ED) visit rates within the 14-county Finger Lakes region over the past two decades by race and ethnicity. Cause-code-based rates count visits according to the underlying event that led to the injury that brought a person to the ED. Visit rates for White non-Latino and Latino residents more closely follow the regional trend, with White non-Latino rates generally below and Latino rates often just above regional rates. However, visit rates for Black non-Latino residents have been steadily increasing since 2005, rising from 100 to 1,028 visits per 100,000 population by 2023. Additionally, the 2023 visit rate for Black non-Latino residents was more than double the rates for Latino and White non-Latino residents. Such disparities in care highlight the need to address social and structural factors that contribute to elevated self-harm rates, including reducing stigma around behavioral health issues and increasing access to culturally relevant care and services.
