Marsh lands in Irondequoit near Durand-Eastman beachCongratulations to the Town of Irondequoit for passing a resolution to designate the town as an Age-Friendly Community.

This designation reaffirms the town’s commitment to enhancing livability through better housing, transportation, public spaces, health services, and civic engagement opportunities. It also ensures accessible, inclusive, and supportive environments for residents of all ages and abilities, fostering healthy and active aging as well as intergenerational connection.

In becoming an Age-Friendly Community, Irondequoit also joins the AARP Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities/World Health Organization Global Network for Age-Friendly Cities and Communities, which provides a framework and resources to help municipalities develop and implement strategies for improving resident’s quality of life.

The town board’s action is in response to Monroe County Aging Alliance (MCAA) efforts to advocate that municipalities incorporate age-friendly policies and planning. MCAA and its member organizations, including Common Ground Health, are engaging dozens of community partners, including government offices, community-based organizations, and businesses, to create a more age-friendly Monroe County. The goal is to allow people of all ages and backgrounds to thrive, enjoy, and have equal access to community amenities and services.

Ann Cunningham, Executive Director of Rochester Oasis, an MCAA member, and Irondequoit Town Board member, led the town’s effort to pass this resolution.
