ED Visit Rates for Self-Harm for Children and Youth

14 County Finger Lakes Region

This chart displays self-harm related emergency department (ED) visit rates for youth within the 14-county Finger Lakes region over the past two decades. Rates have increased between 2006-2008 and 2021-2023 for all three age groups shown: 473% increase among youth aged 6-13, 211% increase for those aged 14-17, and a 146% increase for those aged 18-21. While the upward trend over time remained fairly consistent for youth 18-21, there was an acceleration in rates for the 6-13 and 14-17 age groups beginning in 2018-2020. By 2021-2023, the self-harm visit rate for youth aged 14-17 was more than three times the rate of the 6-13 age group and over one and a half times the rate of the 18-21 age group. Self-harm is often used to provide a sense of relief from feelings such as loneliness, anger or hopelessness. If help for this behavior is not secured, it can lead to a higher risk of suicide.
