Health CareWorkforce UpdatesApril 2022FLPPS announces collaboration to deliver health care to homeless individuals Finger Lakes Performing Provider System (FLPPS) is collaborating with Huther Doyle and Regional Health Reach to provide medical, dental, and behavioral health care to the unsheltered homeless in Rochester. Huther Doyle will pilot a one-year backpack medicine program referred to as the “HOPE” Program to provide “boots-on-the-ground” preventive and just-in-time medical interventions for unsheltered homeless individuals with substance use disorders. A mobile team composed of peers and medical students from the URMC Street Outreach Program will use telehealth, and a mobile treatment van will be available to provide wound care, blood pressure and glucose monitoring, and initiate engagement to treat substance use disorders and addiction. Regional Health Reach will collaborate with MC Collaborative to pilot a street outreach program that brings services out of the clinic and provides care directly on the street, in encampments, parks, and under bridges. This program will deploy a mobile outreach team of providers, medical assistants, and outreach workers to identify and engage with homeless individuals living on the streets or in high-risk areas. CCSI hosts Tuesday Talks: Building Community Resilience In celebration of their 30th anniversary, CCSI is hosting a series of talks on the third Tuesday of each month between April and September with the goal of bringing people together to break down silos and build a stronger community. Monroe County Medical Society offers training on professionalism for frontline staff Presented by Erin Brauen of Western New York Rural Area Health Education Center (WNY R-AHEC), this 3-hour course will highlight the importance of professionalism of front desk staff in health care settings. Topics covered include medical ethics and etiquette in the workplace, professional boundaries, communication, cultural sensitives, and conflict resolution. The training will be held on Thursday April 21 at 8:00-11:00 AM via Zoom. It costs $75 for MCMS & 7th District Members, or $125 for non-members. Two upcoming events to address workplace mental health On April 20, at 12:00-1:00PM, Senator Samra Brouk and the Mental Health Association of New York State are hosting "Mental Health and Wellness 101 in the Workplace" via GoToWebinar. On April 22, at 8:00-9:30 AM, The Business Solutions Institute at Roberts Wesleyan College is hosting a virtual session entitled "Mental Health in the Workplace: Supporting the Whole Person" as part of their Leadership Breakfast series. Health Equity Conference The African American and Latino Health Coalitions are hosting the 2022 Speak Life! Health Equity Conference via Zoom on April 23 at 9AM-12:30PM. This year's theme, Revive, will challenge health disparities and inequities in our health care system, offer a message of renewed hope and energy, and set the stage to create a collective plan of action and path forward as a community. This event is free and open to the public. Spanish and ASL interpretation will be provided. Contact healthcoalitions@commongroundhealth.org by April 18 to request additional accessibility accommodations Training series on medical orders for life-sustaining treatment (MOLST) and eMOLST starts April 28 Excellus BlueCross BlueShield has collaborated with Project ECHO to offer a 9-week training series entitled "ECHO MOLST + eMOLST: Honoring Patient Preferences at End-of-Life." ECHO, or Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes, is an all-teach-all-learn tele-mentoring model that uses case-based learning. Sessions include a 15-minute didactic presentation, followed by a real patient case presentation given by a participant using a Q&A and discussion format. This training is appropriate for all who participate in the MOLST process. Sessions are held April 28-June 23 at 12:00-1:00 PM. Continuing education credits are available for physician and nurses. Applications are open for HRSA Public Health Scholarship Program HRSA’s Bureau of Health Workforce will invest $39 million for 26 awards through the Public Health Scholarship Program (PHSP). The purpose of the PHSP is to strengthen the public health workforce by providing support to organizations to develop scholarship programs that incentivize individuals to pursue training and careers in public health. Eligible applicants are government entities, nonprofit organizations, and academic institutions with an existing public health training program and partnerships that can transition students into employment. Applications are due June 1. Interdisciplinary aging certificate program offered this summer Finger Lakes Geriatric Education Center, along with Collaborative for Palliative Care and Westchester Public Private Partnership for Aging Services are offering an interdisciplinary aging, public health, and palliative care certificate program this summer. The program provides generalist-level education in aging, public health and palliative care, including geriatrics, gerontology, social work, psychology, health policy and advocacy, and pastoral and spiritual care. Sessions are held via Zoom and start on June 4.RIT's Deaf Health Lab publishes paper on telehealth experiencesRIT's National Technical Institute for the Deaf recently published “Making virtual health care accessible to the deaf community: Findings from the telehealth survey” in the Journal of Telemedicine and Telecare.
