Click here   Health Care Workforce Updates   July 2023 Mental health in communities of color symposia to take place in July In recognition of Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, BIPOC PEEEEEEK will host in-person symposia focused on mental health in communities of color. This year’s theme “We Are Each Other’s Medicine” will address several topics of interest including stigma, cultural perspective, provider bias, violence, suicide, the criminalization of mental health in communities of color, disaster related trauma and increasing the pool of black mental health professionals. In-person events will be held at 8:30 a.m. to noon in: Rochester on July 13th, Buffalo on July 14th, Syracuse on July 21st, and Binghamton on July 26. Click here to learn more and to purchase tickets.   American Society on Aging offers free web seminars with continuing education credit The American Society on Aging offers free web seminars on a variety of topics to improve care for older adults. These seminars include one complimentary continuing education (CE) credit. Filter by "web seminars" to find events open to the public.   Colors of Success session examines staff retention and DEI On July 20 at 11 a.m. - noon, the Colors of Success program offered by The Greater Rochester Chamber will present "Looking at staff retention through a diversity, equity, and inclusion lens."  Attendees will learn how to: Understand and utilize an equity-focused framework to identify equity issues, Assess their organizations through employee engagement strategies, and Implement employee-focused retention goals and establish metrics for success. This event is free for Greater Rochester Chamber members, and $25 for non-members. Click here to register.   Eleversity to host Women of Color Summit events The 2023 Women of Color Summit will be held at virtually at 9 - 11:30 a.m. on July 20, 27, and August 3. This year's theme is I.C.U. - Intentionality, Commitment, and Urgency: Pushing the Needle Forward and Upward. This summit will provide an uplifting environment for, by and about women of color that promotes equity, education and professional development.  Click here to register.   Suicide prevention workshop offered for rural providers The UR Medicine Recovery Center of Excellence, with funding from the Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA) partnered with SafeSide Prevention to provide a free workshop focused on suicide prevention training for service providers in rural communities. Content is designed for service providers in rural communities, with highlights on suicide prevention for youth, substance use, and Indigenous or Tribal communities. The workshop will be held at noon - 3:30 p.m. on July 25.  Click here to learn more and to register.   Educational resources available from UR Medicine Recovery Center of Excellence Recordings from the August 2022 Taking Action National Rural Substance Use Disorder Health Equity and Stigma Summit are now available as recorded training modules with CE credits. All modules are self-study activities and include an evaluation and CE certificate immediately following completion of the activity. Click here for a full listing of topics.   As part of a comprehensive training program designed to help primary care providers and staff deliver evidence-based care to patients with substance use disorder (SUD), the center has added two training modules, both offer the option of registering for CE credits: Pregnancy and Reproductive Care for Patients with SUD  Alcohol Use Disorder.   SUNY Corning Community College offers RN refresher course This independent study course will update and enhance the nursing knowledge and clinical skills of registered nurses seeking to transition from a non-acute care environment (long-term care, school nursing, occupational health, home care, etc.) to seek employment at an acute care facility. The course is also designed for nurses who have been out of the nursing workforce who would like to review necessary information in order to return to work as an RN. Click here to learn more.   UR School of Nursing expands tuition-free nursing program The University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) and School of Nursing have announced an expansion of their UR Nursing Scholars Program. The program, offering a tuition-free nursing education in exchange for a three-year work commitment at Strong or Highland hospitals, will now accept 120 students per year, a significant increase from the previous capacity of 33 scholars. Click here to read more.   Eastman Institute for Oral Health named an Oral Health Age-Friendly Health System Participant Eastman Institute for Oral Health’s Specialty Care Clinic is the first oral healthcare provider in the nation to be recognized as an Age-Friendly Health System Participant. Age Friendly Health Systems is an initiative of the John A. Hartford Foundation and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, in partnership with the American Hospital Association and the Catholic Health Association of the United States. Becoming an Age-Friendly Health System entails reliably providing a set of four evidence-based elements of high-quality care, known as the 4Ms, to all older adults. These include what Matters, Medication, Mentation, and Mobility. Click here to read more.   Medical Assistant fact sheet available from NY Health Foundation The Medical Assistant profession is expected to grow in New York State by 27% between 2020 and 2030, much faster than other health care occupations. Elevating the role of MAs could improve health outcomes, reduce clinician strain, and support equitable career advancement. This year's theme is Behavioral Health as Population Health: addressing Behavioral and Social Mediators of Wellbeing and will feature Kathy Parrinello, PhD, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Strong Memorial Hospital, and Wade Norwood, CEO of Common Ground Health.
