Health CareWorkforce UpdatesSeptember 2023Lifespan's Gerontology Certificate Program begins on September 13 Offered in partnership with the Finger Lakes Geriatric Education Center (FLGEC) at the University of Rochester, this two-semester, virtual program begins on September 13. Participants can begin either in the fall (September) or the spring semester (January).Target audience: Anyone interested furthering a career or gaining knowledge about longevity and aging.There are special rates for retirees 65+, family care partners, and Lifespan volunteers.Fall RIT Certified courses starting soon RIT Certified offers a portfolio of workforce development and professional training courses and programs to provide educational pathways to work and help close the talent gap for employers. SUNY Corning Community College to offer peer recovery advocacy & coaching training The Peer Recovery Advocacy and Coaching training program meets via Zoom on Wednesdays at 4 - 7 p.m. on September 13 through December 20. This course helps to develop non-clinical, peer-based recovery advocacy and coaching skills which are designed to engage peers beyond initial contact through stabilization and into recovery maintenance within the community. The program includes 30-hours of peer recovery coaching and the required 16-hours of ethics training. This program is ideal for those who have personal experience with addiction, whether having lived through it themselves or having helped a friend or family member live through it. Urban League of Rochester to host 4th Annual INTERRUPT RACISM™ Summit The INTERRUPT RACISM™ Summit is an immersive learning experience for youth and adults, thoughtfully curated for attendees to identify, interrupt, and dismantle processes of systemic racism. This year's theme is Legacy: What Will Yours Be? Each day will include speaker presentations in the morning and workshops in the afternoon. The Summit will be held in person on September 19 at the Riverside Convention Center and virtual via Zoom on September 20. Positive Steps NY to host "The Four P's of Negotiating My Worth" on National Black Women's Equal Pay Day NIMH webinar to focus on mental health inequities in the Hispanic community On September 21 at 12:30 - 2 p.m., the National Institute of Mental Health's Office for Disparities Research and Workforce Diversity webinar series will present "Engaging Community Stakeholders to Reduce Mental Health Inequities in the Hispanic Community." UR Department of Medicine to host Research in DEI & Healthcare Equity SymposiumThe 2nd annual symposium places a special emphasis on research addressing workplace climate and culture. The symposium will also include research on health disparities, including but not limited to anti-racist clinical care, social determinants of health, LGBTQ+ care and workforce diversity. The symposium will be held in person at the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry Class of 1962 Auditorium, and online via Zoom on September 29, 2023 at 8:15 a.m. - 6:30 p.m. UR Department of Psychiatry to host behavioral health summit UR Medicine Department of Psychiatry's will host its 7th Annual Symposium on Friday, September 29 at 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Hilton Garden Inn in Rochester. This year's theme is Behavioral Health as Population Health: Addressing Behavioral and Social Mediators of Wellbeing and will feature Kathy Parrinello, PhD, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Strong Memorial Hospital, and Wade Norwood, CEO of Common Ground Health. Community Wellness Summit registration open now open - click image below Local Exploring Racism groups forming in October Another round of Exploring Racism Groups is beginning in October 2023. Exploring Racism Groups provide an opportunity for organizational leaders to grow in their knowledge about racism, understand their own biases and perspectives, and become an antiracist by taking action to promote racial justice, and to break down the structures of racism in their own spheres of influence. Community health worker training begins October 3rd NYATEP's Workforce Academy for Policy and Advocacy application now open Applications are now open for the New York Association of Training and Employment Professionals' Workforce Academy for Policy and Advocacy. Applications are due on October 13, 2023. The academy will guide you through the ins-and-outs of the federal and state political, legislative and budgetary processes and provide a candid take on New York politics. The 2023-2024 Workforce Academy for Policy & Advocacy will be a mix of hybrid and in-person sessions, providing 20-25 participants from across New York the opportunity to participate both virtually and face to face at NYATEP’s headquarters in Albany. Who should apply Health Leadership Fellows application now open Applications are now open for Cohort 11 of the Health Foundation of Western & Central New York's Health Leadership Fellows program. Applications are due on November 21, 2023. The goal of the Health Leadership Fellows Program is to develop and strengthen a diverse network of collaborative leaders with organizations and systems that serve young children and older adults in western and central New York. Virtual information sessions will be held on October 16, October 17, and November 7. Who should apply People who are BIPOC, LGBTQ+, or from other under-represented communities are strongly encouraged to apply. FLPPS Learning Management System tapped for NYS DOH Public Health Essentials trainings The New York State Department of Health (NYS DOH) and Health Research Inc. (HRI) has selected the FLPPS Learning Management System as the tool to disseminate public health essentials training. To assist in mitigating funding disparities and inequities, the NYS DOH and HRI recently invested in training and development for community partners (traditional and non-traditional) that are trusted by underserved, marginalized, under resourced, and rural communities across NYS (outside of NYC). Coordinated Care Services, Inc. (CCSI), Care Compass, and United Way of Dutchess-Orange County received funding to provide this training. These organizations will utilize the FLPPS Learning Management System (LMS) to disseminate the public health essentials training to small agency staff members.
The FLPPS LMS administrative and reporting capabilities help lessen training burdens that participating organizations may face. FLPPS is proud to offer organizations a training tool that allows them to focus on what is truly important—the most effective and impactful training experience possible. Monroe County workforce program scan now available from RochesterWorks This summer RochesterWorks conducted a local scan to canvass, assess, and analyze the existing capacity of the Monroe County workforce development system. Funded with the support of the ESL Foundation, this project provides a comprehensive inventory of the resources available in the local workforce system. The primary intended audience is the continuum of stakeholders that make up our workforce system, including individual workforce preparation organizations, training providers, community-based agencies, and anyone else who provides some level of support to communities underrepresented in our labor force. Funding opportunity for NYS child care workforce Applications are open for $500 million from the FY 2024 Budget to bolster New York’s child care workforce through the Workforce Retention Grant Program. Funding will support approximately 150,000 direct child care staff through financial incentives ranging from $2,300 to $3,000 in retention and referral bonuses for existing staff as well as sign-on bonuses for new staff. Institute for Human Services hosting two DEI trainings in October Getting comfortable with DEI: Where do I start? On October 10 at 2 - 3:30 p.m., this interactive session will introduce participants to the ARC of Racial Justice, a model developed by author, Jemar Tisby. ARC stands for Awareness, Relationships and Commitment. During the session, participants will discuss ways to increase awareness and build new relationships while also developing their own personal plan and commitment to dismantling racism. Developing strategic plans through a DEI framework On October 11 at 2 - 3:30 p.m., participants will be introduced to a comprehensive framework that identifies organizational focus areas and internal and external players, along with the stages of development necessary to work through to achieve transformed and equitable environments. Nonprofit organizations sought to serve as STEP internship sites The Skills, Training, & Experience Program (STEP) is a collaboration between RochesterWorks and Monroe County, designed to empower individuals and provide them with work-related experiences, helping them begin a path towards economic independence. This replaces the pre-pandemic WEP (Work Experience Program). By participating in STEP, your organization can leverage the program to access interns who are currently receiving public assistance through the County Department of Human Services (DHS). By providing them with unpaid opportunities within your organization, you can:
STEP partners may include non-profit organizations, government entities, educational institutions, and municipalities within the Monroe County area. For-profit entities are not eligible.
