Resources available to support advance care planning

On May 9, at 7:00 a.m. (EST), the American Society of Aging will host a webinar called Navigating a Terminal Diagnosis: Understanding Patients’ Options to educate clinicians about the full range of end-of-life options, including medical aid in dying, VSED (Voluntary Stopping Eating and Drinking) and palliative sedation, and provide resources for patients who are managing a chronic disease or terminal diagnosis.

National Healthcare Decisions Day (NHDD) occurs on April 16 each year to inspire, educate and empower the public and providers about the importance of advance care planning. A variety of resources are available for patients, families and health care providers to support end of life discussions, including:

  • The Conversation Project, an initiative to encourage patients to express their wishes regarding health care and for providers and facilities to respect those wishes.
  • PREPARE For Your Care is an interactive website for individuals navigating medical decision-making. The new PREPARE For THEIR Care program is designed for those helping others.
  • From the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, How to Talk to Your Patients about End-of-Life Care: A Conversation Ready Toolkit for Clinicians.
  • Online Course: PFC 202: Having the Conversation: Basic Skills for Conversations about End-of-Life Care: In conjunction with the Boston University School of Medicine and The Conversation Project, the IHI Open School offers this course to introduce students and health professionals to basic skills for having conversations with patients and their families about end-of-life care wishes. As part of developing these skills, the course invites you to “have the conversation” yourself, with a family member or other loved one. This course can be accessed with an IHI Open School subscription.
 

Learn about using ChatGPT for grant writing and nonprofit fundraising

On May 17 at 1:00 p.m., Grants4Good will host "ChatGPT and AI for nonprofit fundraising and grant writing." This webinar will explore the potential for artificial intelligence (AI) to help nonprofits, fundraisers, and grant professionals achieve their goals more effectively and efficiently.

Western NY Rural AHEC offers mental health first aid training

Western NY Rural Area Health Education Center (AHEC) will offer two no-cost mental health trainings:

  • Allegany County - Mental health first aid for older adults on Thursday, May 18 at 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. at Crossroads Center in Belmont, N.Y.
  • Genesee County - Mental health first aid on Friday, June 9 at 9 a.m. 4 4 p.m. at Genesee County Mental Health Department in Batavia, N.Y.
 

Caring for Seniors in Rural New York conference to be held May 19

On May 19 at 8:30 a.m. - 3:45 p.m., the Finger Lakes Geriatric Education Center, The Alzheimer's Association Rochester/Finger Lakes Chapter, Ithaca College Gerontology Institute, Lifespan of Greater Rochester, and the Western New York Rural Area Health Education Center (WNY R-AHEC) will host the virtual 2023 Let's Talk About Health: Caring for Seniors in Rural New York conference.

The conference will cover areas including social connection, community-based safety for individuals with dementia, and combatting ageism.

Applications are open for grant writing program for women of color

Funded by ESL Federal Credit Union, in collaboration with Grants4Good, the Women's Foundation of Genesee Valley is accepting applications for its Immersive Grant Writing Program, designed for organizations led by women of color. This is Rochester's first grant writing course centered around the history of Black philanthropy.

This 6-month program starts on July 13. Applications are due by May 26.

Recognize your team through the Quality Council Performance Excellence Awards

The Greater Rochester Quality Council (GRQC), an affiliate of the Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce, announces the 2023 Performance Excellence Awards. The GRQC Performance Excellence Award Program helps organizations in all sectors of the economy gain valuable insights into strategic areas of their operations, connect with like-minded leaders in high performing organizations, and earn formal recognition for achieving excellence through continuous improvement methodologies.

The three award categories are:

  • Team Excellence
  • Organizational Excellence
  • Customer Experience

Suicide prevention workshop offered for rural providers

The UR Medicine Recovery Center of Excellence, with funding from the Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA) partnered with SafeSide Prevention to provide a free workshop focused on suicide prevention training for service providers in rural communities. Content is designed for service providers in rural communities, with highlights on suicide prevention for youth, substance use, and Indigenous or Tribal communities.

Workshops are offered at noon - 3:30 p.m. on May 23 and July 25.

Corning Community College has partnered with Upright Education to deliver online, fast-track career programs. Relevant programs include:

  • Intro to Data Analytics (self-paced)

  • Digital Marketing (16 weeks)

Rochester Regional Health announces tuition coverage for training and career development

Rochester Regional Health has launched a new strategic workforce education program for its employees. The Advance U Education Program will support career mobility for Rochester Regional employees, with tuition paid upfront by the health system. The program will support Registered Nurses (RNs) to obtain bachelor’s of science in nursing (BSN), and will provide entry-level employees the opportunity to gain skills and earn certifications in in-demand career fields such as Medical Assisting or Medical Coding. Additional educational opportunities will be offered in the future.

Thompson to host information session on becoming a CNA

UR Medicine Thompson Health is hosting an information session on its certified nursing assistant training (CNA) program at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, May 9.

Thompson covers the entire cost of the five-week CNA training course and pays participants while enrolled, with part-time benefits beginning immediately. Course graduates are guaranteed a CNA position at Thompson’s M.M. Ewing Continuing Care Center.

The one-hour information session will be held at the Continuing Care Center, 350 Parrish Street in Canandaigua. Those planning on attending must RSVP at Associate_Services_RecruitingFFT@URMC.Rochester.edu no later than Sunday, May 7.

Recommendations to address public health workforce challenges published in Health Affairs

The public health workforce has experienced unprecedented challenges throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. The authors of "We Are the Public Health Workforce" explore give key challenges in recruitment and retention of the public health workforce and suggest policy interventions to address each.

 

FLPPS and HCR Home Care partnering with employers, community organizations to meet urgent demand for home health aides

Finger Lakes Performing Provider System (FLPPS) and HCR Home Care are partnering with home health agencies and community-based organizations to develop and manage a program to recruit and train community home health aides (HHAs).

Funded through grants from the city of Rochester and ESL Charitable Foundation, the program’s goal is to recruit, certify and train 660 HHAs over the next three years, with an emphasis on recruiting candidates from eleven ZIP Codes in the city of Rochester: 14604, 14605, 14607, 14608, 14609, 14611, 14612, 14613, 14619, 14620 and 14621.

FLPPS and HCR are collaborating on this program with employers Rochester Regional Health Home Care and UR Medicine Home Care, as well as the following community organizations:

  • AVS Consulting Strategies will provide pre-employment training.
  • EE Pathways (formerly known as Exercise Express) will assist with candidate recruitment and provide exercise classes and peer mentoring to help new employees become comfortable with their job responsibilities and with the workplace culture.
  • Wellness Associates of Greater Rochester will provide mental health first-aid training.
